The history of the fort is long as it was occupied by many rulers for varying lengths of time. The original name of the fort came from ‘Shahapura’ or, ‘the town of the Shah’. Due to the stronghold of the Sultanate of Bijapur.

When the Portuguese defeated the Shah and seized the fort, it had great military significance for them and the fort was renamed Chapora Fort.

Chapora Fort is accessible from the market town of Mapusa, about 10 km away. Local buses that run regularly from Mapusa town to Anjuna Beach and Vagator Beach make a stop at the fort. Travelers can also hire a taxi from Mapusa or Panaji to reach the fort in Goa.

This fort earlier had rough patches that made it difficult to hike. However, now proper trails and roads are laid down for travelers. The chapora beach and Vagator beach are clearly visible from the fort. Vagator beach is just at a 700 m distance from Chapora Fort and a must-visit beach.

Another fun fact is that the Fort of Chapora got popularized by the movie Dil Chahta Hai and is now a prime attraction of Goa and yes, once can even enjoy a cold Dil Chahta Hai special soda from the local vendors.
