The fort was originally constructed in 1612 by an architect named Julião Simão to guard the Portuguese against the dutch empire and Marathas. The name of the fort “Aguada” was driven from the Portuguese language meaning “watery” and holding true to the meaning of its name, the fort consisted of a freshwater spring that acted as a fresh source of water for the ships that passed by the area.
This popular Portuguese fort is situated perfectly on the beach South of Candolim, right at the shore of the Mandovi River.
Another popular fact about the Fort is its lighthouse which has erected in 1864 and is the oldest of its kind in Asia. Fort Aguada is one of the most popular tourist destinations and is open all days of the week from 9.30 am to 6.00 pm. The hilltop fort is a popular tourist spot, especially to watch the sunset. If you are lucky you can also spot movie stars shooting at this popular destination. Fort Aguada has been host to many Bollywood movie shoots, which make it instantly recognizable.
To reach the hilltop fort there is a 4 km road that heads east from Sinquerim beach, or one can choose the second way which is a steep 2 km walking path that starts just near the Marbella guest house and takes you straight to the hilltop fort.
