
As Goa city once was the seat of Portugal’s eastern empire, once can explore a dozen of catholic churches, capels and converts in the old parts of Goa. One such popular Roman church, is Basilica of Bom Jesus Church and is also part UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The church has a Baroque architectural theme and is located in Bainguinim, Goa. The two expert architects Julião Simão, Domingos Fernandes started the project back in 1594. It took over a decade for the church to get ready and finally on 15 May 1605, it was opened to public.
The church has the miraculously well-preserved body of Saint Francis Xavier, a Roman Catholic European missionary who died more than 450 years ago. The relic comes down once in 10 years and it become a big public event bringing people from different parts of the world.
One fun fact about this church is that it is the only church in India to have a Golden Rose Plant, given by Pope Pius XII in 1953.
